Many times comfort food consists of hours of cooking. This open-faced hamburger steak sandwich is an easy way to have a home-cooked and comforting meal rather quickly. The hamburger steak is well seasoned and smothered with a beef and mushroom gravy and then topped with slightly caramelized onions. Adding Worchestershire and A1 sauces to the ground beef adds flavor to the hamburgers. Serve over crusty, toasted bread or a bed of rice.\u00a0 Made these for supper a while back, and the whole family loved them.

Ingredients :
  • 2 1/4 pound(s) lean beef (hamburger meat)
  • 1 tablespoon(s) Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon(s) A1 sauce
  • 1 can(s) beef consomme (10.5 oz)
  • 1/2 cup(s) diced onion
  • 1/2 medium onion
  • cut into thin rings
  • 1 teaspoon(s) salt
  • 1 teaspoon(s) pepper
  • 1 can(s) beef gravy (14.5 oz)
  • reserve one tablespoon
  • 8 slice(s) Sara Lee classic French bread
  • 3 tablespoon(s) olive oil
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon(s) self-rising flour
  • 1 can(s) sliced mushrooms (4 oz)
Intructions :
  • In a large bowl add the beef
  • A1 sauce
  • Worcestershire
  • reserved beef gravy
  • diced onion
  • salt
  • and pepper.
  • Using your hands
  • knead meat until combined. Make meat into five patties.
  • In a lightly sprayed skillet
  • cook patties for 5 minutes per side or until your desired doneness!
  • In a smaller skillet
  • add a teaspoon of oil and saute onion rings until lightly brown.
  • Drain on a paper towel.
  • Once the patties are done
  • remove them from the skillet and add the 3 tablespoons of olive oil.
  • Let it get hot. Then add the flour. Scrape the bottom of the skillet to get meat drippings.
  • When the flour is brown
  • add the consomme and beef gravy. Stir to mix.
  • Add the mushrooms.
  • Put the patties back in the skillet. Use a spoon and coat the meat with the gravy and mushrooms. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Toast the French bread.
  • Add two slices of bread per plate. Put meat on top of bread. Spoon gravy and mushrooms on top. Garnish with onion rings.
