Apple And Sausage French Toast Casserole With Cinnamon Syrup Recipe @pinch

The aroma from this baked French toast is divine! There are so many layers of flavor in this breakfast casserole. The Challah bread layer is sweet, soft, and creamy. Sausage makes this hearty and adds a savory flavor. Apples and raisins add a sweet and tart taste. We love the cinnamon syrup so much, we plan to try it with other recipes. Drizzling it over your slice of the casserole is out of this world delicious. When my family has reunions, we love making breakfast the night before so there is less cleanup to do in the morning. Then the first person up starts the coffee and puts the breakfast casserole in the oven. The sweet smell of French toast and sausage gets everybody up every time!

  • 8 ounce(s) cream cheese, softened
  • 1/3 cup(s) brown sugar, packed
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon(s) cinnamon
  • 6 - eggs, slightly beaten
  • 2 cup(s) whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon(s) pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup(s) seedless raisins
  • 5 ounce(s) dried apples, diced
  • 1 - Granny Smith apple, peeled and chopped
  • 1 pound(s) breakfast sausage, cooked and crumbled
  • 1 cup(s) brown sugar, packed
  • 3/4 teaspoon(s) cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon(s) salt
  • 1 cup(s) water
  • 1 tablespoon(s) corn starch
  • 1 teaspoon(s) pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoon(s) unsalted butter
Intructions :
  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Spread the cubed bread in a single layer on 2 sheet pans and bake for about 15 minutes. Cool slightly, then transfer the bread into a greased 9 x 13-inch baking pan
  • In a large bowl, mix the cream cheese, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Add the eggs, milk, and vanilla
  • Sprinkle the raisins, dried apples, chopped apples, and the sausage over the bread. Pour the egg mixture over the bread. Using a spoon, gently push the bread down until it is soaked
  • You can bake it now or cover it with foil and refrigerate it overnight to bake in the morning. (If you are baking it in the morning, let the casserole sit at room temperature while the oven preheats.) Bake uncovered at 350 degrees F for 35 - 45 minutes just until the center is set
  • While the French toast is baking, prepare the cinnamon syrup. Combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a small saucepan. Combine the water and corn starch in a measuring cup, then pour into the pan
  • Cook over medium heat and bring to a rolling boil, stirring often. Remove from the heat and add the vanilla extract and butter. It will be the consistency of syrup
  • When the French toast is out of the oven, drizzle some syrup over it and serve the rest on the side. By now, everyone has smelled it cooking and they will be ready to eat! Serve hot.
